Go for fat loss, not weight loss
Go for Fat Loss, not Weight Loss
Your body weight includes bones, organs, muscles, water and fats. As you age, you tend to lose bone and muscle mass, but fat tends to accumulate at a faster pace due to the slow down in metabolism and the lack of physical activity.
Your weight might be the same for the last 5 or 10 years or just gain negligibly, however, the composition of your body weight may have shifted over the years with more fats and less muscle and bone mass.
If you have been religiously relying on the weighing scale for comfort, you need to realise its not a good gauge of your total health and fitness plans. Measuring your body composition will take the guesswork out and give you a better picture of your diet and exercise goals. ( Have you started one yet? )
I know of some personal trainers who encourage their clients not to use the weighing scale more than once a week, but instead, monitor their body composition ( measure body fat ) .
Generally, body fat percentages for an average women is 20-25% ( 15 - 19% optimum) , and for the average men 15 -20% ( to see your 6 packs abs, between 10 - 14%) .
There are several products in the market which you can purchase and do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. These products cost about $50 or less and is quite easy to use. Here’s my pick…
1) FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper with FREE MyoTape
2) Accu Measure Fitness 3000 Personal Body Fat Tester
The best way to lost body fats is to do it slowly, safely and healthfully and of course, keeping it off permanently. You want fat around your hips and thighs completely gone and a firm flat stomach. You want muscle all over your body while looking feminine for women and ripped and sculptor for men.
You can continue to use the scale, the measuring tape, the mirror and most importantly, if you are passionate about losing that body fat and living a more healthy lifestyle, invest in a Body Fat Caliper.
